The new year will bring a few new names to the top of the Serie A standings.
The winners of the last two Champions League finals, AC Milan and Juventus, will be in the fray in the first leg of the Champions League group stage.
There is a further two-legged tie between Napoli and Roma at the end of January.
There will also be a third leg of Euro 2016 between Croatia and Albania at the weekend.
With all this uncertainty around the Italian national team, the first half of the season has been a frustrating one.
It has been difficult for a number of reasons, but the most glaring of which has been the absence of a consistent centre-forward in the squad.
The current squad of Giuseppe Rossi, Alessandro Del Piero and Andrea Pirlo has been far from the best and it was only with Del Piera’s arrival at the start of last season that they were able to start making some noise in the centre of the pitch.
Del Piero was a revelation, not only in his role as a defensive midfielder, but also as a creator in front of goal.
Pirlo was one of the best passers in the league last season, and his passing ability was matched only by his passing accuracy.
Paolo Maldini and Andrea Barzagli, who have been in the team for most of the campaign, have been equally as effective in front as in the front.
That, in turn, has meant that Milan’s attacking options have been severely limited.
Juventus are a much more experienced side, with Roberto Mancini in charge and a group that has included Andrea Barzini, Andrea Piacentini, Mauro Icardi, Alessio Cerci and Matteo Bonaventura.
Milan have made a big step forward since the departure of Barzagini, and have won six of their last nine games in all competitions.
While they have been successful in the last few seasons, the club has struggled to find their footing under the new manager, Massimiliano Allegri.
In terms of attacking threat, Milan have not been very good.
The club has managed just five goals in all of last year’s Serie A and only four goals from the penalty spot.
They have also conceded six times in all competition, which is worse than most teams.
This season, however, has seen them turn their fortunes around.
Allegri’s men have scored six goals in their last five matches and conceded just four in their four remaining.
“I think we are in the position to be successful in Italy and the European competition,” Allegri told reporters ahead of the derby.
I think Milan are the best team in the Serie. “
That’s what we are trying to do.
I think Milan are the best team in the Serie.
We will be able to continue our progress in the Champions league.”
Albion have lost just two of their previous 18 matches, including a 2-0 defeat to Napoli at the Stadio Olimpico.
As the new season approaches, Allegri will be hoping that his squad can put a positive stamp on the league as well as the Europa League.
Last season, Allegi’s side were in the thick of the race to win the Europa league, having beaten Bayern Munich in the group stage, and then secured a top-four spot by winning the title.
On top of that, they also finished third in Serie A, having qualified for the Champions Cup for the first time since 2009.
If Allegri can keep his team in top form, they may well be able for this season to achieve a little more.
Italy are in their third season in the top flight and have reached the last eight in each of the past three seasons.
