Braille is the new literacy.
In Australia, a survey of students found students reading more on their own when they read on Braille, while literacy levels in primary schools and primary schools with the most Braille-reading students fell from 57 per cent to 47 per cent.
Braille literacy is increasing and now, according to the Australian Institute of Sport, there are at least one in three Australians who read on their phones, tablet or computer.
But what does it all mean for our lives?
In an interview with The World Today, Dr Peter Rimmer, the former president of the Australian National University and a professor of physical education and physical activity at the University of New South Wales, said it’s a good sign, but it’s not a panacea.
“It’s about the individual, the individual’s individual skills, and their individual strengths,” Dr Rimmer said.
“And if we want to improve literacy and literacy achievement for the next generation, we need to find ways to get those individuals to understand and use Braille more, not less.”
Dr Riner said it was not possible to create an optimal learning environment for all students.
“We’re just not there yet,” he said.
Dr Rimmer also said the lack of information about how much reading is effective for children is a problem.
“One of the issues is that it’s hard to get a definitive answer,” he explained.
What’s also very interesting about Braille and reading is that they are different languages. “
So I don’t think we’re really sure.”
What’s also very interesting about Braille and reading is that they are different languages.
“If you have a language where you don’t understand everything, you can’t read very well,” Dr Cusimano said.”[But] Braille doesn’t sound like English or French.”
So in terms of literacy, if we can find ways for children to learn Braille they can learn much more than just Braille.
“Dr Cusinano is part of a research team from the University’s School of Education and Education Research that is conducting a study on the benefits of reading on Brails, and how much Braille we actually need.”
This is an important time in our education system because we need the best and most up-to-date information about reading,” he added.
The study is looking at how much children need to learn in order to read on a regular basis, and what kinds of reading materials are best for them.
The results of the study will be released in the coming months.
